Having cut my teeth in Local papers in Northern Ireland I then studied an H.N.D. in Edinburgh. As I successfully finished my qualification, I was employed as a staff photographer with Scotsman Publications in 1996 till 2000. In 1996 and 1997 I visited Bosnia, to work for the Scotsman publications. You learn to live by your wits and learn to understand just how a country can fall apart, and how to document such events. In 2000 I started to freelance for The Scotsman, Sunday Herald, Scotland on Sunday, and all related magazines. The Sunday Times, the Herald, the Sunday Herald, and Sunday Mail. I have had images printed in the L.A Times, Paris Match, The Independent and New York Times to name but a few, winning numerous awards on the way. In 2002 I fulfilled a desire to cover the storm season , in the Mid West of the U.S.A. for the Sunday Herald in Glasgow. During the ten day trip, I encountered Biblical shelf clouds, and lightning only available, on the plains of the Midwest. There were some hairy moments, but when you are watching God's light show, it's hard not to be awestruck. Baseball hail, severe risk of lightning strike and a scary drive through a Tornado producing supercell, between Greensburg and Wichita Kansas at night, will always be a memory. Being a member of the press you learn to shoot quickly with quality, and this has stood me in good stead for the varied Press and commercial clients for over twenty years.
As a freelance for over twenty years, I have worked for such business clients as, Coors, Pol Roger, The Halifax, The British Council, The Sheraton Group as well as countless projects with the Business press. As part of my job as a staff and freelance photographer, I was regularly shooting for restaurants and other commercial fields. This carried on rather nicely into my freelance work for top Public Relations and Advertising companies in Scotland and now in Northern Ireland. For many years I photographed for the Sheraton Grand, Prestonfield, The Vu, The Balmoral, The Orient Express, The Lost Sock Diner owned by a masterchef winner, and many many other commercial shoots. Working with food stylists and designers is part of the work and something I found rewarding and after the shoot is done, tasty.Business shots have been part of career for over 20 years. Being a regular freelance for Business AM, as well as the business pages of all the other titles I have worked for. I always tried to make strong punchy, graphic style image, no matter how mundane the subject, providing images in liaison with the client to provide a fresh and modern look to their advertising or internet needs, and with my Press work and contacts Public Relations companies have always been impressed with the coverage their clients get.
In 2005 after helping an ex colleague shoot many weddings for his firm Duke Wedding photography, I started my own Wedding Photography business, Gallery photography. Having now over ten years in business, we have covered weddings at many venues in the Edinburgh and central belt areas of Scotland. Glasgow University, Edinburgh Botanic Gardens, Prestonfield House, The Hub, Norton House Hotel and The Vu in edinburgh, and since moving back to Northern Ireland in 2015, I have been booked for weddings at the Clandeboye Lodge in Bangor and we are one of the chosen suppliers at the Crawfordsburn Inn.
